College Football's Biggest Games Of 2014

By Camden Joiner on September 9, 2014

Two weeks are already in the books for college football fans but luckily there is so much more ahead of us.

Week 1 featured many great match-ups including LSU vs Wisconsin, UGA vs Clemson and Texas A&M vs South Carolina. Last weekend was no different with many exciting games, highlighted by a thrilling Oregon vs Michigan State shootout.

However, the best is yet to come for this season and here’s a list of impactful games to look forward to.

Week 3: Georgia vs South Carolina

The two front-runners for the SEC East face off this Saturday in Columbia. The Gamecocks were blown out at home by the Aggies in Week 1, but their season isn’t over yet.

A win over Georgia would put them in the driver’s seat to win the SEC East and earn a shot in the SEC Championship game. As for the Dawgs, South Carolina should be their only real challenge in winning the East division.

Week 7: Oregon vs UCLA

This PAC-12 match-up has major title implications and not just for the PAC-12 title. Two Heisman contending quarterbacks are going head to head in what should be a high scoring barn burner. Marcus Mariota looked flawless last week vs MSU and the Oregon defense was very impressive in the second half. UCLA has got off to a bit of a slow start, but QB1 Brett Hundley is one of the most dangerous players in the nation.

Week 8: Texas A&M vs Alabama, Notre Dame vs Florida State

Johnny Manziel famously defeated the Crimson Tide in his freshman season, launching him into stardom. Texas A&M quarterback Kenny Hill has played incredibly well to begin the season, but will need major help from his defensive if they are going to knock off the Tide in Tuscaloosa. The winner of this game might just go on to win the SEC West and fight for a playoff spot.

Everett Golson and the Fighting Irish have played well out of the gate, but they’ll have to defeat the Seminoles in Tallahassee if they hope to earn a spot in the playoffs. Jameis Winston and company will certainly not be doing the Irish any favors.

Week 10: Oregon vs Stanford

The Oregon Ducks have been in prime position for a title run the last two seasons until running into the Cardinal. Marcus Mariota has never beaten Stanford as a starter and this will be Oregon’s toughest challenge of the season. However, after losing a close one at home to USC, Stanford may have questions to answer of their own.

Week 11: Alabama vs LSU, Baylor vs Oklahoma, Texas A&M vs Auburn

Clear your schedules for November 8 because it will be a day best enjoyed sitting on the couch. Three pivotal games highlight the week including two featuring the four prominent teams in the SEC West. The winners of each game will be put in a prime position to win the West, while the losers could be finished for the year.

Even bigger is the Big 12 match-up between Oklahoma and Baylor which will absolutely crown the champion of the Big 12 and perhaps secure the winners’ spot in the playoffs.

Week 12: Georgia vs Auburn

Last year’s rivalry game was as thrilling as they come and this year should be no different. Both teams are currently ranked in the Top 6 and could very well still be by the time November 13 rolls around. Georgia looks for vengeance in their toughest challenge of the season and Auburn simply cannot afford to lose playing in a top heavy SEC West.

Week 13: USC vs UCLA

The Battle for Los Angeles in reality will be a battle for the PAC-12 South division. Cody Kessler and the Trojans looked impressive in their victory over Stanford, but still have a tough schedule ahead. Brett Hundley will be looking for a trademark game to add to his Heisman resume and the rivalry game vs SC could be the perfect mix.

Week 14: Auburn vs Alabama

The Iron Bowl came down to a returned kick for a touchdown in the final seconds and earned Auburn a spot in the National Championship Game. This season the implications should be no different as both teams currently sit in the Top 5.

However, this year the game will be played in Tuscaloosa and the Crimson Tide will be looking for sweet revenge.

Here is the video of Auburn’s kick return touchdown last season.

Week 16: Army vs Navy

This classic rivalry game has no title implications whatsoever, but is an important game nonetheless. Army and Navy always bring sleek uniforms and unique offenses to their December rivalry and it almost always makes for an exciting battle.

Watching the troops cheer loudly as any college football fan is a pleasant sight and this tradition creates a remarkable annual spectacle.
