9 Things to Do When You Have a Summer Cold

By Jessica Mahmoud on June 24, 2015

With the nice weather and so much time off from school, summer break can be really amazing. However, these plans can be delayed if you get sick. Summer colds are the worst. Here’s some ideas on how to spend your time getting better.

1. Audiobooks

Sometimes actually reading a book can get boring. Audiobooks can be fun because of the voice(s) of the reader, and it lets you just relax and listen. While they’re perfect for travel, they’re also nice to just lay in bed and relax to.

Try going on Audible.com and picking a fiction, young adult book. Since it’s summer there’s no need to pick out anything mature. Check out these LGBTQ books, or you can always opt for John Green. I’m almost done listening to “Paper Towns,” just in time for the movie. I highly recommend it.

2. Download music

Another thing I feel time needs to be set aside for is downloading music. Go through Spotify, or your favorite show’s soundtracks to find some great new tunes. Then go ahead and download them. You probably even have some songs you’ve really been meaning to download but just never got to it. As you’re laying in bed with cough drops and Vitamin C, now is the time.

3. Write

If you’re a uloop.com writer, take this time to write a bunch of new articles. If you’re reading this and you’re not a writer, sign up! Writing could also be writing poetry, a story, or just documenting your life. Journals are also fun to write in, anything at all, because they’re great to look back on. Your future self will thank you.

4. Plan ahead

Now, I know school isn’t for a few months but if you’re feeling proactive, you could start planning ahead. This includes looking up textbooks or supplies you may need for the classes you’re taking in the fall.

But planning ahead could also be planning all the things you want to do when you’re feeling better, which is hopefully soon. It could also be planning how you want to decorate your dorm room and making a list of everything you need to buy before move in day.

5. Reach out to old friends

As you lay in bed with your laptop, use social media to reach out to old friends. Unfortunately, you probably can’t go hang out with them, but it’s always nice to say hello. Summer is often a time where friends drift apart because school and classes are done and everyone is kind of on their own schedule. Friends, old or new, will thank you for reaching out. It’s a great time to catch up and see how they are doing.

6. Watch movies

Netflix or YouTube are great go-to’s when you’re sick. Movies, even if you’ve seen them are also a nice comfort to lay around and watch. I just watched “Dead Poet’s Society” with the beloved Robin Williams. If you haven’t seen it, you should definitely watch it.

7. Pick up a new TV show

Like me, you probably have a whole list of your “shows.” Ya know, the ones you DVR each week so you can fast forward through the commercials. Even if you’re already keeping up with a bunch, one more can’t hurt you. This is a great time to watch older seasons of a show that’s currently on TV so you can start watching the new ones.

8. Paint your nails

Painting your nails is always something that takes forever. They come out best when you actually have the time to let them dry and put on a top coat. Since you have this time, try some funky nail art you found on Pinterest. That is, if you have the energy.

9. Sleep

Finally, do something productive to actually getting well: sleep. Sleep is the best medicine.

If it’s not obvious, I unfortunately have a summer cold. I hope if you’re sick too, or just bored, this gave you some ideas on how to spend your time. If you are sick, be sure to take some Vitamin C, drink some hot tea, and don’t spread your germs. It’s annoying, but it’s best to just take it easy for a bit until your cold passes. Get well soon!
