It is almost that time of year again: when all the football lovers gather around the largest TV they can find,  crank up the surround sound, and burry themselves in mountains of nachos, pizza, and wings. Oh yes, it’s super bowl time.

For those of you like me, that means some cool commercials and a halftime show. (This year’s is headed by Coldplay, and as if that’s not good enough, Bruno Mars and Queen B will be there too!) And of course, enjoying the mountain of food.

But in the midst of your commercial-watching and half-time-waiting, there’s another show you should check out: The Puppy bowl.

Every year for the past twelve years Animal Planet has brought us their own adorably wonderful rendition of the Super Bowl. While this is indeed a captivating, fluffy, and pun-filled show of puppies playing with each other, it’s not solely for entertainment. All of the puppies in the puppy bowl are up for adoption, and Animal Planet not only gives them their moment in the spotlight, but helps them find loving homes by the time the next Super Bowl Sunday rolls around. This year Animal Planet found their 49 puppies in 44 different animal shelters across America.

During the game, not only will the two teams be head to head and tail to tail fighting for the victory, but all the puppies will be in rough competition for the coveted title of MVP (Most Valuable Puppy). Dan Schachner will be on stand by as “Rufferee” to stop any rough housing and call the penalties. The game also includes the silkie chicken cheerleaders, the “Pup close and personal” segments, and the Kitty Halftime Show (this years San Francisco-inspired show featuring the Golden Gate Bridge, Fishmen’s Wharf, and “Al-Cat-Raz”.) You can also follow Meep The Bird’s live tweets on all the action: @MeepTheBird.

If all that isn’t enough for you, they have been known to include the occasional Kiss Cam segments as well.

This is a show worthy of becoming a pre-super bowl tradition. Animal Planet is even working with the Pro Football Hall of Fame to institute (are you ready?) the Puppy Bowl Hall of Fame! (Massive collective *AWWW*) The goal behind this is to promote the adoption of older dogs too (it tends to be much easier for puppies to find homes).

So get out there and start your Puppy Bowl Fantasy Team: http://www.puppybowlfantasy.com/ (Oh yes, that’s a real thing).
You can check out the players here: http://www.puppybowlfantasy.com/puppies

And don’t worry–I know changing the channel on Super Bowl Sunday is forbidden, the Puppy Bowl starts at 3 (with the pre game show at 2:30), so by game time your football-lovers can have the TV all to themselves.

So the real question is, are you #TeamRuff or #TeamFluff?
