5 Activities For Book Lovers To Try This Summer

By Allison Elder on June 18, 2016

Summer is the best time of the year for book lovers — without classes, assigned readings, and piles of homework, we’ve got plenty of time to settle in with a good book and get to reading. However, reading isn’t always a solo activity. There’s a rich literary culture and community that you can enjoy your books with.

Here are five activities for book lovers to do this summer, whether alone or with a group.

Book Club

Book clubs are great for people who want to dedicate time to reading, but don’t always want to do it alone. Gather a group of friends and read the same book, then choose a time and a place to come together to discuss it.

If you don’t want to set up the club yourself or don’t have friends who are interested, check out already existing book clubs in your city. Most public libraries, Barnes & Noble, and meetup.com are great places to search for book clubs catered to your interests, so you don’t have to enjoy reading alone.

Reading Series

Reading series, sometimes also referred to as writers series, usually invites authors and/or poets to speak and read from their work either monthly or annually. This is a great way to get connected to the literary community in your area and find new friends who are just as interested in reading. In addition, you could meet some pretty cool authors and learn something new about their work.

Do a Google search of your city name and “reading series” to see what pops up! Reading series are commonly hosted by universities, so that’s a great place to start. There might be one happening right in your backyard.

Library Events

Public libraries are a great resource for book lovers, especially in the summer. Most public libraries host summer reading events — even for adults. This could take the form of a book club or a reading competition. There are also “one read” programs where the entire community reads one novel selected by the library and gathers to discuss it, fostering a literary community and promoting discussion.

It’s never too late to get connected to your local public library. Look up their website or visit them in person and ask what kind of programs for book lovers you can get involved in this summer.

Book Festivals

Book festivals are less common, so it’s not a guarantee that you’ll be able to find one happening in your area this summer. But it doesn’t hurt to try! Book festivals are a wonderful event where readers and writers can gather to discuss literature with various panels and events. Book festivals are a great way to discover new writers and novels that you might not have tried before.

Read

Whether you read on your own, with a club, or with your community — read. Set goals for yourself, discover new authors and genres, and let yourself get lost in the worlds that authors create. Read as much as you can before the fall semester starts up again!
