Dining hall food, much like student political groups, can be hit or miss. Thankfully, FSU’s Suwannee Room has a lot of options and I’ll try anything once! Here’s a Freshman’s Guide to Surviving the Suwannee Room:

For Consistency…
The Grill is the most consistent station in the Suwannee Room. Every morning, you’ll find eggs, potatoes, and some sort of breakfast meat. In the afternoons and evenings, you’ll find hotdogs, hamburgers, fries, and two different kinds of soups. For anyone who values consistency, the Grill’s menu is almost identical from day to day. If that’s not your style, there’s also an all-day salad bar right next to the Grill. The contents vary, but you can find a pretty wide variety of fruits and vegetables there.

On Weekends…
On weekends, the good people of the Suwannee Room put out humus, vegetables, and pita and, honestly, it’s the highlight of my weekend. Since Suwannee opens later on the weekends (10:30a.m. as opposed to their usual 7:30a.m.) it’s a great midday meal if you’re an early riser or healthy way to get protein and vegetables if you’re just waking up.

For Home-style…
Obviously, the best place to find home-style food in the Suwannee Room is the Comfort station. This station’s menu varies from day to day and meal to meal, from eggs and French toast to meatloaf and potatoes. If your mother has ever made it, chances are it’s available at the Comfort station. This is also the best station to find meat outside of hamburgers and hotdogs.

For Sweets…
For those who are picky about the flavor and texture of their desserts, your best bet is to hit the Sweet Shop on Jefferson. For non-picky eaters, the Suwannee Room does a great job of providing a small variety of cookies and cupcakes that are easy to grab and go as you head off to class.

For Vegetarians…
Other than weekend humus and pita, the Suwannee Room has a salad bar that’s stocked full of vegetables, legumes, plant-based proteins, and vegan dressings. They also usually have one meatless soup offering, although that isn’t always the case. For anyone following a vegan diet, the salad bar is your best bet. A tip from someone who likes eating meat-free: you can get a wrap or bread from the deli area and make your own vegan wrap or sandwich with materials at the salad bar.

Overall…
The Suwannee Room is full of nice people who are happy to help and answer any questions you may have. The staff is friendly, the food is good, and the environment is very nice. The Suwannee Room does FSU proud by upholding the Garnet and Gold in their quality and I’m a very satisfied customer.
