From my Book to my Nook

By Amanda Seaman on July 28, 2012

As an avid reader I have been more than against the concept of an electronic reader. The thought of trading in my lovely books, and their new book smell, for a computer makes me wish that they didn’t exist at all. Swearing that I would never buy one myself, nor let anyone I have ever met buy one I felt satisfied that they wouldn’t last very long on the market.

But after a few years, they seem to still be going strong, and my mom was just dying to try out the latest technology. So, reluctantly I let my mom buy herself a Nook, and prior to about two weeks ago I refused to even touch the thing.

As the Nook sat on my kitchen counter, tempting me with the book I desperately wanted to buy from Barns and Noble already loaded on, I began to convince myself that using the Nook for just one day, until I could make it to the book store, was okay.

Found on news.cnet.com I picked up the reader, and strolled off to work, hoping I would have no free time to read, so it wouldn’t matter that I brought the Nook along anyway.

Of course work was not that busy so I picked up the Nook and began to indulge myself into a new world.

400 pages later, and I was in love! Not only was the second book to the series right in my hand, but I could carry both books around with me without breaking my back.

As I worked my way into not only one but two more books on the Nook, I began to reconsider my hatred, and began to wonder why I hadn’t tried one out sooner.

Realizing that I could get not only leisure books but school books as well, I was overwhelmed with the possibilities. I could already feel the weight of my backpack and bank account decreasing.

Despite the fact that the electronic books will keep me from the book stores, and that I will feel silly going to the book store and spending countless hours reading the back of every book I can get my hands on, I’m willing to splurge now to save later.

And who knows, with the way technology is going maybe soon enough the e-readers will even have that new book smell each time to crack open a new book.
