More Than a Sibling

By Meredith McDevitt on March 13, 2017

For most college students, leaving home was a huge deal: parting ways with Mom’s homemade meals, not being able to go to Dad for something you really wanted, and not having your siblings to pick on anymore. College is the time you’re supposed to find yourself and decide your future within education and a career path.

Except, finding yourselves comes within your family as well; college isn’t all textbooks and stressful all-nighters. College students need their family’s support and everyday love, their phone calls telling us we’re going to make it, and of course their advice towards our biggest mistakes. However, sometimes phone calls don’t cut it. If you’re lucky like me, you go to school with your sister and two cousins, so family outings are pretty frequent. Going to college with your siblings and family members is the best decision and life experience you can dream of.

Knowing you have someone who’s got your back with anything you do might be the best feeling in the world. Knowing you can ask for advice with no judgment, and having someone knowing you better than you know yourself is what everyone wants in a relationship. Especially within the four years of college, between the social scene, studying, and life experiences, having a sibling going through the exact same things makes life a little easier.

Growing up with siblings can be hard sometimes; however, your sibling relationship changes once you hit college. You’re determined to be successful, a little more mature (hopefully), and you want to “make it” in the big intimidating world we live in. Within all these crazy desires and goals in college, many students get lost. Yet, having a sibling who lives down the street and walks to class with you, telling you you’re going to make it and who supports your every move, that’s what growing a sibling relationship is all about.

Sooner or later you become attached at the hip more than you were at age four: sharing dresses and closets for hot date nights (or Bachelor Monday nights with the girls), attempting to cook Mom’s recipes together, and finding more friends through one another’s friends. The sibling relationship shifts gears in college due to experiences within academics and the social environment. So, transitioning throughout life together is less scary and even more thrilling when it’s next to your own sibling.

Ultimately, your maid of honor or best man at your wedding is your brother or sister. Knowing you’ve been at each other’s side since day one, through college, and side-by-side at each other’s wedding makes life go a whole lot smoother. Someone to embarrass you in front of your new spouse and family, giving toasts to late college nights together, and the person that lights up the dance floor — who sooner or later transitions into the aunt or uncle of your first child, the kids you practiced raising together through Barbie dolls.

Every single life event, your siblings have walking side by side with you. Going to college with your siblings makes your relationship that much more valuable towards the past and future to come.
