"The Get Down:" Over Already?

By Ellie Drabnis on April 17, 2017

My younger cousin and I had ourselves a ‘watch party’ of sorts to watch Part 2 of the Netflix series, The Get Down, in its entirety. Our watch party was really just the two of us huddled on the couch enjoying pizza and dirt cup snacks that I made, but it was fun either way.

Now, the series itself: The Get Down.

Wow, just wow …

I am still practically speechless over it. I will keep it spoiler-free for a moment and, without giving too much away, I would say that if you’re a music fan, in general, this is the series for you. Sure, it might be a better suited series to fans of R&B, hip-hop and more funk-oriented styles of music, but the way that rock and pop music intertwine into hip-hop by way of sampling is worth noting and, well, what comes out on the other end is an expression of art and The Get Down brings such an aspect to life.

Still staying in (mostly) spoiler-free territory, the series as a whole blends music and full-rounded characters — that the actors are putting their hearts and souls into — to the forefront which makes for an enjoyable show that never has a minute to drag, as even the most dynamic series can have their moments of dragging. However, the action, drama, and wonderful story pushed to the forefront doesn’t give the series such a chance and for that, I’m a very pleased fan. Again, I urge everyone to watch The Get Down even if only out of curiosity. You will not be disappointed.

Each episode is very much a ‘mini movie’ in its own right and leaves you hungering for more. Speaking of which, let’s get into those juicy spoilers.

 **WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD**

Since season 1, I called the fact that Luis, aka Papa Fuerte, was Mylene’s father. I can’t take all the credit though since I have grown up watching telenovelas (even if my Abuela really didn’t want me to), but that is something of a telenovela cliche. But, it was handled well in the series and overall, I’m glad I was right about it.

When they first popped up on the screen, I was not at all enjoying the animated segments present throughout Part 2 of the series but I ended up loving them in the end. These segments helped to develop Dizzee’s character a little bit more by showing his love of art. Not to mention, the art style used within the segments was made even more vibrant with how well it fit with the accompanying music which then showed how two different art forms can come together and put such an emphasis on what art truly is.

Last season, Zeke said something to Angie about wanting to be able to ‘keep a foot in each world’ and would eventually go on to give up his internship if only to have the freedom to make music with the rest of The Get Down Brothers. And, that made me curious …

At the start of Parts 1 and 2 of the series, Nas starts rapping to set the scene. Now, I would know my favorite living rapper anywhere and well, I wonder: Is Nas playing himself or are Nas and the three singers supposed to be Zeke along with older Mylene and her Soul Madonnas, Yolanda and Regina? I understand that Nas is indeed providing Zeke’s older rapping voice, but, what’s happening at that concert? And yes, I am fully aware that Nas is a producer on the show.

On the one hand, I like the slight mystery there, but on the other hand, I really want to know the truth. And speaking of truth …

Is the series over?

I’m left wondering what will become of Mylene and The Soul Madonnas, Zeke and The Get Down Brothers, Papa Fuerte, Miss Fat Annie and the rest of them.

 I NEED TO KNOW!

Okay, I’m exaggerating there but it would be nice to know.

If the series does continue, I would love to see it come into the ’80s and show how hip-hop emerged even further and forever changed music history as a whole. Plus, I would love to see a Christina Aguilera cameo since her melodic voice is the one behind the stunning ode to funk from season 1 called ‘Telepathy.’

The Get Down: Parts 1 and 2 can be watched using Netflix.
