3 Foods That Make You Smarter

By Khadija Dukes on October 7, 2014

Studying, taking notes and being mentally prepared before an exam are some of the best ways to prepare for a big test or project. However, eating the right foods can also help to improve memory and brain function, helping you to retain more information. Here are three of the best foods to eat to make you smarter.

Blueberries

Blueberries are packed with an antioxidant called anthocyanin that is known to improve memory. Including blueberries in your diet can help prevent your memories from declining by making brain cells stronger in the face of stress. Adding a cup of blueberries to a bowl of oatmeal or putting them in your pancakes are great ways to incorporate this superfood into your diet.

Green Tea

This antioxidant-rich beverage is filled with EGCG, a polyphenol that contributes to memory retention. Green tea has been proven to enhance spatial awareness and enhance memory retention. Having a soothing cup of green tea each day will not only help you to retain information more easily, but it also contributes to your overall health due to its antioxidant properties.

Dark Chocolate

Improved memory is just another excuse to eat chocolate, as if anybody really needs an excuse to eat more chocolate. Dark chocolate specifically contains many antioxidants, as well as flavanoids, a compound also found in blueberries. The flavanoids in dark chocolate not only improve cognitive skill, but they also increase blood flow to the brain and contribute to the formation of new brain neurons. Eating 2 ounces of dark chocolate a day is all you need.
