Ponchos: The New Fashion Frontier

By Amanda Cohen on October 25, 2015

When I first started seeing ponchos hung up in all of my favorite clothing stores, I was confused; the last time I wore a poncho was when Limited Too was selling their classic knit ponchos in a plethora of colors (something that is no longer fashionable today).

Even though Limited Too’s version of the poncho is no longer trendy, ponchos themselves are making quite the comeback in the fashion world. When I was trying to style an outfit around the newest addition to my closet (a grey, sweater-material poncho), I was having issues deciding exactly what looked good with this new clothing item.

After experimenting with different looks, I found a few successful ways to pull off this fun, new style!

A simple, solid-colored, tight long-sleeved shirt is perfect under a three-quarter-length poncho. It not only keeps your arms warm, but a poncho with bare forearms does not look great. When deciding what color shirt to wear under the poncho, go with your gut and look at the colors and patterns of the poncho to make the best choice! However, do not be afraid to use vibrant colors to wear underneath ponchos that are more neutral. Bright colors like pinks, greens, and reds will add a fun feel to your entire outfit.

For solid-colored ponchos, a cool pair of bottoms would be camouflage skinny jeans or skinny jeans with large “statement” pockets on either side. A charcoal poncho would look great with olive-green jeans and a black poncho would be a perfect match for blue-camouflage pants. Color blocking works as well with ponchos, but the patterned pants give the entire outit a fun touch!

A fun accessory to wear with ponchos is a wide-brim suede hat. Recently, I have seen these hats in stores ranging from Urban Outfitters, Pitaya, Verbena, NastyGal, Nordstrom, and so much more. This hat makes a trendy outfit even trendier and you will be all of the talk on the streets when you strut with the coolest accessory around.

These hats are comfortable, cute, and go with any hairstyle–braids, big curls, pin-straight hair, beach waves, low-side ponytail, etc.

Heeled booties are the perfect final accessory to complete your entire poncho outfit. Ponchos tend to be baggy, and having a small heel makes the look a little more elegant and more “crisp.” Black booties with a black poncho and olive-green skinny jeans make for a fantastic daytime outfit (if you wear a bigger, more casual purse) and an evening outfit (if you wear a smaller clutch or cross-body bag).

Ponchos are the new frontier in fashion, and with these very easy tips, anyone can pull off this latest trend!

Now, I know after reading this article many of you will want to go out and buy a stylish poncho of your own, therefore I wanted to provide a few places where you can get this trendy new item! As a college student I know spending money on clothes is a struggle since they are so expensive; however, you do not have to break your bank to wear the latest fashion trends.

Places like Forever 21 and Tobi are often pretty cheap and constantly have sales and promotions to get discounts off of your order (your first purchase a Tobi is even 50% off)! Also, places like Nordstrom’s Rack have a bunch of big name-brand items for a fraction of the usual cost.

However, my secret weapon when it comes to online shopping is Australian websites. Sites like HelloMollyFashion, Missguided, Shei, Xenia, BooHoo, SaboSkirt, and Choise have such cute items and are not as expensive as U.S. websites. Shipping takes longer, but trust me, you will not be disappointed!

Ponchos are more for the winter months; a great summer alternative to the poncho is the kimono! Kimonos are similar to a cardigan, but are more light-weight and more appropriate for the summer. How to pull off these kimonos is similar to how to pull off a poncho — the only difference is wearing short sleeves instead of long sleeves and to wear shorts, skirts, or white or pastel jeans instead of dark denim.

Kimonos come in all sorts of lengths, patterns, and styles; my personal favorite is a patterned kimono with beige or off-white fringe at the bottom. Not only can kimonos be worn to dinner, but they make great bathing suit coverups and pool-side attire. Put on your bikini, kimono, and floppy hat and you will be ready to be on the front page of InStyle Magazine!

Get ready for the breezy fall weather and the cold winter months and buy a poncho that is versatile and coherent with your taste in clothing. Whether you prefer darker tones or loud colors, there is a poncho out there fore you. Trust me, you won’t regret this purchase.
