The 21st Century Man is Upon Us And He's More Well Dressed Than Ever

By Max Berman on November 20, 2015

I don’t know about you, but I’ve noticed a peculiar trend when it comes to men’s’ fashion, and this is all coming from the eyes of a gay man. It seems that not only has fashion come to the forefront, regardless of sexuality, but has begun to take on a new tone of acceptance and progression. It’s actually pretty funny, anything a gay guy is wearing now, you’re guaranteed to see on a straight man exactly a year later. Joggers? Sported them all last year, Urban had a great collection. Meanwhile, chubbies and jeans thrived on campus. Now you look around and it’s drop crotch sweats and joggers while they wheel around on their hoverboards. It sounds totally douchey to say, and I feel like an asshole writing about it, but it’s the honest to god truth, and it can’t go unsaid. It explains why every other guy you see now has a sad, tiny little knot ripping out their scalp with shaved down sides. Maybe they’ll make it a couple more months and give up and shave it off, or there are those who maybe will one day near the completion of the new straight ideal: The man bun.

It’s not even limited to fashion, the new social interactions I see sometimes at the club literally leave me baffled. Hypermasculine, roided out guys slapping each others asses and embracing, whooping as they dominate their kingdom together. Bros literally facetiming more than they talk to their girlfriends, and in group chats with their friends gossipping and giggling. I don’t want people reading this and think I have a problem with men being in touch with their softer side, or allowing themselves to be vulnerable. I just think the straightest, most masculine guys who go around perpetuating hatred towards gay people actually act the most stereotypically homosexual, and it’s a hilarious thing to observe. As someone who peers into the straight world from the outside, it’s interesting to watch the broader interactions involve and new social acceptance take place. From handshakes to fistbumps to bro hugs, rising from the depths of ill-fitting jeans and oversized tee shirts, the new 21st century straight male is upon us, and he’s more well dressed than ever.
