Treadmill Or Catwalk? Fashion In Fitness

By Amanda Cohen on February 22, 2016

When going to a party or on a night on the town, it is of utmost importance that you present yourself in a high-fashion manner. However, it does not just stop there; the gym itself is its own runway featuring bright colored yoga pants, patterned shirts, and awesome shoes.

Have you ever heard of the “look good, feel good” mentality? Well, when it comes to exercising, this simple phrase rings true. I always have a better workout if I am wearing a bright-colored matching outfit (despite the fact that my friends sometimes poke fun at me). Here are a few ways to revamp your gym attire that will make you want to run those four miles on the treadmill!

Yoga pants

Yoga pants are probably my favorite article of clothing on this planet because they are no longer limited to just being black with the occasional colored waist band. Nowadays, you can find solid-colored pants, patterned pants, pants with sayings on the sides, and so much more.

The best part about this new workout era is that literally every single website is selling some variation of workout attire. Each brand/designer uses different colors, materials, patterns, and styles … it is literally impossible not to find a pair that suits your own individual taste.

Lululemon is my favorite place to get my yoga pants for a variety of reasons — the material is comfortable, they provide a variety of styles (cropped, long, spandex, etc.), and they have hundreds of colors and patterns that you can mix and match with any shirt. My personal favorite of these plethora of choices are the Wunder Under Pant. The Wunder Under yoga pants are not cropped and they are made up of extremely breathable material; they are perfect for running, yoga, or even just going to class.

Since these are one of the more popular options for pants, Lululemon ensures that they are stocked with a variety of colors and patterns. They offer concentric-circle looks, ombré, neon, triangles, exquisite patterns, and more.

If you want to combine your bohemian style with your healthy-living, I suggest browsing Teeki’s website. Teeki’s yoga pants feature patterns like skulls, sunsets, arrows, flowers, feathers, elephants, and skulls. The material itself is extremely flattering and you can wear the pants with any neutral-colored top.

Even though the pants themselves look like they are only fit for the top yogis in each of your workout classes, that is far from the case. Whether you’re a runner, a lifter, a beginner yogi, or advanced yogi, these pants will make you look the part and motivate you to want to hit up that yoga class or go on the treadmill.

Tops

Now, even though shopping for yoga pants is fun, you need something to wear on top that is both fashionable and supportive. I realize that I have mentioned them before, but Lululemon has some of the best workout tops around. I understand that they are expensive, but I have seriously had some of my Lululemon workout tops for five years and they still look brand new. Whether you want a loose-fitting top and a sports bra separate from that, or a top with a built-in sports bra, Lululemon has it all (and unfortunately for me, this does not help my addiction to purchasing workout attire).

My favorite sports bra is the Energy Bra for many reasons. First, the material is extremely breathable and you have the options to add in or remove the padding from the cup area. Second, the bra is so supportive; when you are running, you want to be as comfortable as possible, and having a good sports bra is the perfect place to start. Lastly, the Energy Bra is so cute. Every season Lululemon brings out fresh new patterns, but also ensures to keep the classic solid colors in stock.

If you’re like me and you don’t like showing off too much skin when working out, you need a good top to wear over your Energy Bra. You can either go for a classic racer-back workout top, or you can get creative! Realistically, you can wear just about any top if you find the right sports bra, but why not find a top that will make you want to go to the gym and show off both your style and your healthy lifestyle?

You can go to the usual places like Lululemon, Under Armor, Athleta, Fabletics, etc. However, I suggest going to websites like Etsy and finding tops that have cute sayings on them. Or, if you prefer going for a monochromatic look, try just going to any website and finding a loose-fitting, solid-color tank top!

Whether or not you choose to follow my suggestions, just make sure you always stay true to your style. If you prefer wearing sweatpants and a sweatshirt to the gym, do it. If you want your pants to make a statement so you decide to buy two pairs of patterned yoga pants, do it. If you want to start working out to have another excuse to go shopping, do it. It just goes to show you that working out and fashion are not mutually exclusive (thank goodness)!
