How You Know They’re Really Your BFF

Many of us have met and made quite a number of “friends” throughout our lives. There were our elementary school, middle school, high school, and college friends; friends from sports teams and choir practice; friends we met at the playground and played with for about an hour, whose names we never knew.

There were our frenemies, the people we passed by in the hallways at school with whom we never had full conversations, the friends we made an effort to hang out with a couple times but eventually gave it up.

Every day there are so many people who pass in and out of our lives, people with whom we hope to form genuine relationships. But too often, many of these friendships fizzle out, leaving us wondering who our real friends are and which friendships will last.

A lasting friend is someone who will do anything for you. You bring your problems to them and shamelessly ask for advice, and they will listen and talk you through it no matter the circumstances. You share good news with them and they’ll celebrate alongside you, happy because you’re happy. On the flip side, you know that they’re a friend worth keeping if you want to do all these things for them too. In one another’s eyes, you are both special and deserving of each other’s time and attention.

A lasting friend is someone you can completely be yourself around. You’ve grown so comfortable around them, you don’t worry about them judging you because you know they accept you for everything you are.

A lasting friend isn’t necessarily someone you’ve known for an incredibly long time. Some people have kept the same friends for their entire lives, perhaps having grown up alongside them and gone to the same preschool or something similar, and just never truly parted ways. These friendships are rare and beautiful.

Yet, sometimes, a lasting, true friend can be someone you met last month or a few weeks or even days ago. Maybe you haven’t known them for very long, but you already feel yourself clicking with them. You automatically feel comfortable around them and your conversations always flow.

You don’t hesitate to tell them everything that’s going on in your life, and as the days and weeks and months and years go on, they become part of almost everything that’s going on in your life. And even when you haven’t seen them for a while, you always both pick up right where you left off, as if nothing’s changed.

When you find a true friend, never let them go. They’ll last a lifetime.
