A wonderful part of college is that when you get there, you are starting in a whole new environment with a host of different people who are exactly that — different from you. People come from different backgrounds and different places and experienced different upbringings.

It’s a great big melting pot of people and it is up to you to make connections and make yourself a part of the community you are adopting. A lot of college students move on from student housing and dorms and go on to move into apartment communities, which in college towns, can often be comprised of a majority of students.

This living community is no different than the one you create at school. You can still make ties and connections and should in order to make the most of your college career. Make yourself truly at home by making your apartment complex and the other people who live there a part of your life. Read on to learn some easy ways to transition into a new apartment community!

Join in community events

Many apartment complexes, especially ones that are comprised mostly of students, host lots of events in order to not only get their residents excited to live there but excited about the other people living there. The events are a nonintrusive way for you to see who lives where you do and make connections with them.

Maybe you did not know that Taylor, who has been in two of your classes, lives there too. Meeting at such an event and learning something more personal about each other outside of class, making connections, can be a gateway for you to develop a relationship and friendship. Maybe you did not know the two girls living in your building right above you share your major — they might have a lot of insight and advice to give you or might be interested in studying together. That would have been a missed resource had you never had the opportunity to meet them and did not have the shared connection of your housing.

Even if you do not have any blatant ties or connections like that, you can still find people interested in the same kinds of things as you. If your complex has a horror movie night, and you love horror movies, you might find a group of like-minded people to connect with and become friends with. Perhaps your complex is having a costume party — and you love costume parties — you might meet others who love costume parties just as much as you do.

And even if you do not make the kind of connections you are interested in, you still get all the freebies of the events, like free food, movies, prizes, and more to help make up for it!

Meet your neighbors

When you move into a new apartment complex, it is no different than when you move into a new housing development or neighborhood — you still need to meet your neighbors!

There are several reasons why meeting your neighbors is a good idea. You can feel safe knowing who is around you and recognizing the people you see around your home. You can ask for help or get assistance in emergencies. You can more calmly and reasonably talk out any issues or complaints that have to do with noise and the like. Knowing your neighbors just makes everything run smoother.

But another great reason to feel at home in your new apartment complex is to become friends with your neighbors, or at least build ties and a sense of community with them. It will make you feel more settled and help decrease stress levels. You can do it the same way you would in a neighborhood or not — it’s up to you. Go to them, knock on the door, introduce yourself. Invite them over to your home, offer refreshments, hit it off. However you want to do it is fine, as long as you make the effort and go one step further in making your apartment a home.

Get to know the staff

Another great way to transition into a new apartment complex is to get to know the staff that works the clubhouse. If you ever have a question, a concern, a need, an issue, it is supposed to be their job to handle it for you. But there are a lot of people living in every apartment complex and you want your matters handled with care and efficiency.

If you get to know the staff, it can help your life run much smoother. When you have a relationship with those who are taking care of you, it can help speed up the process when you have issues. When the staff knows you, they are more likely to take more time and effort to help you solve your dilemmas.
