My 2021 Bucket List: A Year of Learning

By Debora V. Aberastury on January 13, 2021

A week into 2021, and despite the bumpy start to the new year, I still find myself hopeful for 2021.

In an attempt to keep myself engaged and productive, I’ve pulled together a ‘bucket list’ of sorts for the new year. To keep myself and others around me safe, my list is full of things that I want to learn how to do, rather than places to travel to (although I am itching to travel again, as soon as it is safe).

While, yes, it may be ridiculous to be thinking about learning for fun, there are a few things that I’ve been eager to learn myself that are far from academics. Although my own personal list is extensive to say at the least, I thought I would share a few of my own points to perhaps inspire your list for 2021.

There are four things on my list in particular that I want to learn how to do for no real reason other than that I’ve always admired people who are able to do it: origami, the harmonica, juggling, and magic. I am not aiming to be a full-on magician, I should add, but I want to be able to pull one magic trick out of my pocket, anytime and anywhere.

I mean, life is too short not to pursue what you’ve always admired, right?

In the pursuit of learning how to do something a little more practical, I’m aiming to learn how to play poker and how to play chess (#QueensGambit). Why would I consider that practical, you’re likely asking yourself? What I imagine is that at some point in my life being able to play poker or chess will somehow give me a chance to network where I might have otherwise not had the opportunity.

I also have a few things on my list that are not heavy on learning, such as finding the way to somehow watch all of the Oscar Best Picture Winners. There are a total of 92 movies on the list, some that I’ve thankfully already watched. Watching all of the Lord of The Rings movies is also on my list because I never managed to sit down and watch them, despite owning the DVDs for years.

Although this may seem like learning, it’s more of a ‘doing’ activity on my list: cooking. I’ve grown to become not too shabby of a cook throughout the last few years, but I’ve struggled to come up with simple, easy to make meals that aren’t frozen chicken nuggets and frozen vegetables. In an attempt to eat healthier, I have on my list five meals that I aim to make and perfect this year: spaghetti sauce, chicken noodle soup, beef stew, frittata, and macaroni and cheese.

I am more than eager to start checking each thing off my list one by one. If there is any lesson that I’ve truly pulled from 2020 is that life is too short to continue avoiding or forgetting to do things that you really want to do. 2021 will be the year that I get those little goals finally checked off.

As you write your own list for 2021, consider those little goals and get them on your own list! Whether it is learning a seeming mindedness hobby or finally cooking a recipe you’ve been eying for years, get. it. on. that. list. Let’s make 2021 the year that we get what we want actually done, done.
